Nesom [= Aster divaricatus L.] ASTERACEAE Herbs to 2.5ft tall, locally abundant, often forming large colonies, ray petals white, disk flowers yellow-white & becoming purple-brown* stems green to blackish. Growing on a moderate NE-facing slope in a shady forest dominated by white pine planted perhaps 70 years earlier, in loamy soil (Scio very fine sandy loam, 3-8% slopes; coarse-silty, mixed, active, mesic Aquic Dystrudepts). Growing with Acer platanoides, Arctium sp., Betula populifolia, Bidens frondosa, Celastrus orbiculatus, Circaea lutetiana (?), Fraxinus americana, Geum canadense, Moms alba, Phytolacca americana, Pinus strobus, Polygonum caespitosum var. longisetum, Prunus serótina, P. virginiana, Quercus rubra, Rhamnus frangula (= Frangula alnus), Rubus occidentalis, R. pensylvanicus (?), Sambucus canadensis, Solanum dulcamara, Solidago rugosa, Symphyotrichum cordifolium (= Aster cordifolius) & Toxicodendron radicans. To the S. side of Fresh Pond, just N. of Huron Avenue. Cambridge, Middlesex Co. Elev. about 35ft. Approximate location: 42° 22’ 45.0"N, 71° 08' 53.5"W. UTM 19 323148E, 4694112N (NAD83/WGS84). Coll.
