Steuben; Eagle Hill, Humboldt Field Research Institute, 4 miles due south-southeast of junction of Smithville Road and U.S. Route 1. West side of Dyer Bay, on east facing slopes along coast, between ends of “Blue Trail” and “Red Trail”, south of Schooner Point opposite Sheep Island. Elevation 0-40 feet. Acidic-salty humus, sand, gravel; granitic - gneissic outcrops and glacial boulders, littoral zone. Coastal evergreen conifer forest (boreal forest), dominated by Abies balsamea, Picea rubens, Betula papyrifera. Patches of salt marsh below dominated by Juncus gerardi, Spartina spp. Locally common densely colonial rhizomatous perennial herb, culm bases purplish; in upper freshwater seepage - influenced salt marsh at high tide mark with Juncus gerardi.
