Shimek State Forest (Lick Creek Unit), owned by the Iowa DNR, is
approximately 5 miles west/southwest of Donnellson and on the Southern
Iowa Drift Plain. 1000+ ramets of Hydrastis canadensis occur in an upland
oak-hickory forest and adjacent stream terrace forest (the latter with Jualans
niara. Ulmus americana and Prunus serotjna). The collection comes from
stream terrace forest at the base of a southeast-facing, moderate slope. Most
ramets are past peak bloom, some are in full bloom, many are fading or
vegetative. The filaments are white. Hydrastis canadensis is associated with
Clavtonia virainica. Dentaria laciniata. Phlox divaricata. Tovara virainianum
and Viola pubescens.
