Habitat
In a flat area south of steep slope, with exposed sand and ‘tree islands’. In very sandy, gravelly soil with a thick oak-leaf litter layer interspersed with bare areas thickly covered in mosses. Growing with Vaccinium pallidum, Quercus alba, Quercus velutina.

Description
Large multi-stemmed shrub to 3.6 m. Bark smooth, gray. Just past peak of flowering. Leaves unfurling, densely pubescent underneath, very fine hairs on top of leaf. New petioles and stems pubescent as well. Just 3 or 4 shrubs. Phenology of specimen: Flower.
