LOC:Brazil, Mato Grosso do Sul, Bela Vista, near and just N of the
Corrego Machorra and just N of km 665 (between km 664 and km 665) on
BR-060. Elevation ca. 2Q5 m, S22° 00’ 16.4”, W056° 29’ 27.9”. Hilly
terrain. Rocky soils.
OBS:Palm solitary. Tallest specimen to 30-40 cm tall. LEAVES 3-4 in
crown, spirally arranged and spreading. Leaf sheath ca. 2-4 an long,
pseudopetiole (leaf sheath plus petiole) is 4-9 cm long, with the true
petiole 4-8 cm x 4-7 mm wide and 2A mm thick with a fibrous leaf
sheath, adaxially channeled and abaxially rounded. Leaf rachis 17.5-49
cm long. 7-13 pairs of leaflets which are distributed regularly along the
midrib. Basal leaflets 8.5-43 x 0.1-0.5 cm, middle leaflets 31-54 x 0.8-1.1
cm, and apical leaflets 14-35 x 0.2-0.4 cm. Tranverse veins raised and
very visible on the adaxial surface of the leaflets. Androgynous
INFLORESCENCE is a spike. Prophyll not measured. Peduncular bract
with a total length of 10-26 cm including a beak of 0-1.5 cm and the
expanded or inflated part of the bract measuring 7-11.5 x 2-2.8 cm and
with a 3-3.8 cm perimeter and a 1 or less mm thickness; peduncle 5-17 cm
long, 0.3-0.4 cm thick and no rachis, but the total inflorescence from the
basal flower to the apex measuring 4.5-8 cm. There is 1 rachilla or
primary branch measuring 4.5-8 cm long. This is a critically endangered
palm, this is its only known locality (perhaps as few as 4 individuals and
10 seedlings left) between the fenceline and the highway, but mostly in
the fenceline.
