espSyagrus sp. nov.
DET: L. R Noblick
LOC:Brazil, Goiás, Chapadáo do Céu: Parque Nacional das Ernas, ,
elevation ca. 838 m, S18 ° 10’ 22.8”, W052 ° 49’ 55.0”. Flat terrain.
Deeper Sandy soils. These plants growing on the roadside where they were
accidently covered with additional earth when the road was replowed.
Therefore the plants were deeper undo-ground and had to grow up through
the additional layers of soil before emerging into the sunlight. That may
account for the different perhaps straighter appearance of these leaves
over the normal twisted leaf habit.
OBS:Pahn solitary, sometimes appearing to be clustering, acaulescent but
with a short underground stem. Tallest specimen to 40-50 cm tall.
LEAVES 3-4 in crown, spirally arranged and spreading. Leaves usually
appear to twist slightly, but these leaves appear straighter. Plants very
crowded together. Leaf sheath is ca. 11 cm and pseudopetiole (portion of
sheath plus petiole) is 5-8 cm long, with the true petiole 4-6 cm x 4 mm
wide and 2-3 mm thick with a fibrous leaf sheath, adaxially channeled
and abaxially rounded. Leaf rachis 14-17 cm long. 6-9 pairs of leaflets
which are distributed irregularly in clusters of 2-4 or singly along the
rachis in various planes. Basal leaflets 16 x 0.3 cm, middle leaflets 14-30
x 0.5-0.6 cm, and apical leaflets 25 x 0.4 cm. Androgynous
INFLORESCENCE is usually a spike. Prophyll measures 3-5 cm x 0.9
cm; peduncular bract with a total length of 9-12 cm and the expanded or
inflated part of the bract measuring 5-9 x 1-2 cm and with a 1.5-3 cm
perimeter and less than 1 mm thick; peduncle 2.5-6 cm long, 0.3 cm thick
and no rachis, but the total inflorescence from the first basal flower to the
apex measuring 3-8 cm. There is 1 rachilla or primary branch measuring
3-8 cm long.
