    Lowlands in Champlain Valley, locally damp; largely isolated tree in old field at end of fencerow; abundant Solidago canadensis, also Cirsium arvense, Asclepias syriaca, Typha, Arctium, Vitis ?vulpina, Alliaria.

    Tree with at least 5 sprouts each 5-10 cm dbh, 10 m tall; other trees nearby also relatively smooth, up to 3 dm dbh, 25 m tall. No fruit.
