EX HERB. HORT. BOT. REG. KEW.
Caesalpinia peltophoroides
BRAZIL: Territòrio Federal de Roraima,
Municipio de Boa Vista.
Boa Vista town.
Cultivated street tree to 7m, DBH 20cm,
Bark greyish-brown, vertically fissured and
fairly rough. Foliage lime green, soon
drooping after being cut. Flowers strongly
and sweetly scented of vanilla. Buds with
a golden rusty brown tomentum. Calyces
abscising from pedicel 1—2mm below calyx
base. Distinct colour contrast between
calyx stalk and true pedicel (pedicel
greenish). Petals sunshine yellow,
standard speckled orangish. Stamen
filaments yellowish-green, anthers
brownish. Inflorescences full of
copulating bugs and numerous Xylocopa bees
visiting flowers at 3.15 pm — covered with
Caesalpinia pollen only (casual
observation).
Bees collected at 11 am on 7.4.87 — very
active; hot sunny dry morning — many in
attendance frantically buzzing from flower
to flower (visiting only one or two flowers
per inflorescence). Easy to catch. Only
one species observed.
Vernacular name: "Sibipiruna".
"Tree watered daily, flowers twice a
year and produces much fruit" (fide house
owner).
Flowers, petioles etc. in 70% alcohol.
Photographs — Andrew Patterson.
