Caesalpinla echinata Lam. vernacular name: *Pau brasII'. BRAZIL: estado de Espirito Santo, Reserva Biologlca de Sooretama, oeste de BR101, norte de Linhares, ca. 40°W, 19°S. CULTIVATED. Tree Co 15m, DBH 40cm, elegant rounded crown with lower branches 2m from ground. Bark greyish, rough, flaking in chunky blocks to reveal orangish-brown under bark. No spines on trunk and most branches also spineless but a few spine-tipped warty growths on regrowth branches. Tree at least 20 (and probably 3040 years old), said to flower and commence fruiting in November-December. Leaflets much larger than normal for the species, deep glossy green. Some old, dehisced fruit still on tree but most collected from the ground, some seedlings in area. Blood red resin exuded from cut branches & trunk (photograph). Spirit & fruit material separate.
