PLANTS OF THE GUIANAS

Aechmea brassicoides
GUYANA. Menzie's Landing. 421 m 5°10'1.4"'N 59°29'29.5"W. Trail to
Johnson's Point Lookout. Secondary successional forest by stream.
Epiphyte 1-2 m off ground on trunks of trees. Forming small colonies of
2-8 connected rosettes. Plants yellowish in sun or shade with purple
blotches on inner surface near base. Young rosettes with normal tank
center, older rosettes approaching flowering with central mass of
contorted wrinkled.leaves, resembling a cabbage with many overlapping
leaves in cross-section. Inflorescence bracts purple. Corolla pink.
Filaments pale purple. Anthers and style white. Biting ants with eggs
present in the 2. Silica sample (1) and alcohol preserved flowers (1).
