San Bernardino Valley: city of Rialto, Santa Ana River, 10 m downstream of the effluent discharge pool for the Rapid Infiltration and Extraction Facility (RIX), 1.2 km NE (73°) of the intersection of Riverside Ave. and Agua Mansa Rd. (San Bernardino South 7.5 Q.: 34°02'29"N, 117021'16"W, ±100m). Alt.: 264m/867ft. Submerged in rapidly flowing warm (constant 75F), clear wastewater with 50-90 percent cover of mature southern cottonwood willow riparian forest (Populus fremontii, Salix spp., Baccharis salicifolia, etc.). Aquatic substrate with >75 percent cover of rocky cobble with patches of sand. Associated aquatic species included Veronica anagallis-aquatica, and various algae (Compsopogon coeruleus, Melosira varians, Terpsinoe musica, and Stigeoclonium sp.) Submerged aquatic (15-45cm water depth) forming large mounds (30-60cm wide by 100-150cm long) attached to rocky substrate. The rapid flow allowed prostrate growth with no portion of the plant extending to the water surface despite stems over 1 m long. Monoecious and diclinous. Female flowers and frt. smooth.
