POLYGALACEAE Polygala sanguinea L.
Erect herb, even when carefully dug up in the
crumbly sandy soil the root system appears
rudimentary. Flowers odorless; inflorescence
dark pink at top, light pink at bottom before
the mature flowers fall off, the yellow flower
parts at the tip of the inflorescence are
scarcely visible. Seeds shiny black.
Common in sterile sandy loam pasture in Pine
River flood plain, parts plowed ca. 5 years ago,
the only time in 25 years, but all these years
it has been heavily patured; vegetation grassy,
rather sparse.
WISCONSIN: Richland Co., 3 miles SE of Richland
