    "Taboleiro," old primary tall humid forest, thick leafmold on sandy soil. with Marantaceae, Araceae, and grasses (Eremitis, Olyra, Cryptochloa, Streptogyna).

  • Description

    Abundant in forest, more so in open areas; inflorescences on erect culms ca. 1/2 m tall and on shorter ± prostrate upcurved shoots; producing subterranean shoots to 2/3 m long (boring 10-20 cm deep into the sandy soil) and bearing apically a large white terminal fruit from which develops a seedling more robust than those coming from seeds of aerial culms; during midday sun blade folds togerher along midrib.
