Distribution
Ilex verticillata (L.) A. Gray, var. tenuifolia, FI. North. States, 338 (1824). This variety with thin, ovate leaves, glabrous, except a slight pubescence along midvein on the under surface, and with mucronate-tipped, pressed teeth, originally collected by Dr. Torrey in the swamp at New Durham, has recently been collected by Mr. M. Whitfield at Mt. Washington, Berkshire Co., Mass. Var. padifolia (Willd.), T. and G. in S. Wats. Index, i. 220, is distinguished from the type by its thicker (almost coriaceous), broadly oval or meatfly leaves. The original specimen in Herb. Torrey came ftfom Erie. The plant is common on the Pocono Plateau of Pennsyl- vania. Professor Trelease, in his review of North American? species of Ilex in Trans. St. Louis Acad. Sci. Vol. V., does not redog- nize either of these varieties, but they appear to me well-marked enough to warrant consideration. 5/195k Ilex verticellata (L.) Gray G. EDWIN, U. 8.
