^juS Harvard University, Gray Herbarium (GH) PLANTS OF NEW JERSEY Ilex opaca Ait. AQUIFOLIACEAE Tree 20ft tall, trunk diameter 5in, common. Growing in a shady, old-growth swamp forest in wet, peaty soil (Manahawkin muck, 0 to 2 percent slopes, frequently flooded; sandy or sandy-skeletal, siliceous, dysic, mesic Terric Haplosaprists), with Acer rubrum, Clethra alnifolia, Fagus grandifolia, Liquidambar styraciflua, Magnolia virginiana, Nyssa sylvatica, Smilax rotundifolia (?), Sphagnum macrophyllum, & Sphagnum spp. In the middle of Bear Swamp, around 0.6mi S of a railroad, & around 1.6mi ESE of Frames Comer. Downe Township, Cumberland Co. Elev. about 10ft. 39° 17' 55.3"N, 75° 08' 06.0"W; UTM 18S 488360E, 4349932N (NAD83/WGS84). Coll.
