Elevation about 1430 feet. Appalachian Mountains.
Gneissic rock ridge, humus-rich peaty soil.
Mesic forest, with Tsuga canadensis, Nyssa sylvatica,
Ilex montana, Rhododendron maximum, Quercus
rubra, Betula allegheniensis, Kalmia latifolia. Fruits
green, immature; leaves shiny beneath, less so above;
occasional shrub 2-3 meters tall in understory and forest
margins.
