Georeferencing Method
Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. It could not be determined which direction was traveled away from "da Séde" [translated as: the seat/headquarters] of the Fazenda Sao Rafael; therefore, georeferenced to 1 km (no direction) from the approximate geographic center of the most developed area of the Fazenda Sao Rafael, in Mun. Una, Bahia. Using a fine-scale paper map of the area (Superintendência do Desenvolvimento do Nordeste. "Camacá" [Map]. Mapas da Região Nordeste do Brasil – 1:100,000. Convênio SUDENE – Governo do Estado da Bahia. SUDENE, Recife, PE, Brasil. 1977) found the location of the Fazenda Sao Rafael, and noted its position relative to prominent nearby terrain features (alongside a dam near a bend in the "Ribeirão da Alaiança" [now Rio Una]). Using Google Maps - Satellite view, found the location of the Fazenda Sao Rafael referencing the terrain features seen on the paper map. Because two separate clusters of buildings could possibly constitute the seat/headquarters of the Fazenda, used Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) to measure a straight line between the two building clusters, and then divided that distance by half to approximate the midpoint. Used Canadensys Lat/Long Crosshairs to find coordinates for midpoint. Using Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) again, found the linear extent by measuring from the selected coordinates near the midpoint of the Fazenda to the farthest edge of the most distant building in the area. Input coordinates, linear extent (0.552576 km), measurement error (0.0005 km), and distance precision (1 km) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Offset: No Direction).
