Habitat
Densely wooded steep incline, in very damp humus and well-drained soil.

Description
Less than medium sized tree; stem 10 inches in diameter, 35 feet tall, branched from near the middle, subterete, nearly straight; wood odorless and without taste, hard, heavy, tough, brownish; branches slender, divaricate, freely rebranched; bark very thin and very dark brown, scaling in thin plates; leaves horizontal or descending, flat, tips recurved, coriaceous, much deeper green beneath; inflorescence latral, ascending, stalks dark green and angular; pedicels and calyx yellowish; petals and filaments whitish; anthers lilacinus; flowers faintly but sweetly fragrant; fruit globose, less than 0.5 inch in diameter, hard and pale green, violaceus when mature.
