Gravelly granitic flats; largely open, withPinus
jeffreyi, Abies concolor, and Quercus chrysolepis
scattered rather widely.
Perennial from a woody root, with short prostrate woody
stems above ground, forming compact mounds 3-8 dm broad;
Leaves silvery pubescent; leaflets fairly cupped; corollas
fragrant, rich purplish-lavender; keel slightly paler with a violet
tip; banner with a bright yellow center patch (without markings),
aging muddy brownish; back of banner with very few, sparse,
strigose hairs, mainly on midrib; keel apparently glabrous below,
densely ciliate on upper margin, particularly distally; pollen
bright orange. Locally associated with Phacelia imbricata
patula, Ph. davidsonii, Chrysothamnus nauseosus, Eriogonum
wrightii subscaposum, E. nudum, Elytnus elymoides, Layia
glandulosa, Agoseris retrorsa, Hulsea vestita gabrielensis, etc.
