Ridgetop. Partially maintained by occasional “brush-
hogging”. With scattered trees of Juglans cinerea, Quercus
rubra, Prunus serótina, P. americana, Carya cordiformis
and remnants of old apple orchard.
Shrub 2 m. tall, the stems to 1.8 cm. in diameter, most
branches arching. Voucher for wood specimen, MADw.
Older stems have lost their spines. Bark smooth, with
peeling areas. Fruit on old stems with smaller leaves than
those on the more vigorous sprouts, which are densely
spiny.
