Ridgetop. Partially maintained by occasional “brush-
hogging”. With scattered trees of Juglans cinerea, Quercus
rubra, Prunus serótina, P. americana, Carya cordiformis
and remnants of old apple orchard.
Treelets or shrubs, the common species of Crataegus here, the
base to 18 cm. in diameter, but usually soon branching, with
spreading crown. Spines on leafy stems simple, slightly
curved, the ones on main branches and trunk often compound.
This individual 5.5 m. tall, the wood specimen from stem 10
cm. in diameter. Voucher for wood specimen, MADw. Leaves
somewhat glossy above. This species in full anthesis (the one
individual here of coccínea L. var.pringlei (Sarg.) J. Macklin
& J. B. Phipps (Nee 61126) is past blooming); flowers musty-
fragrant; petals white.
