Large sedge meadow with many shrubby Salix, Spiraea
alba, surrounded by secondary forest with Populus
tremuloides, Abies balsamea.
Shrub with many slender stems in a tight clump, to 2.5 m.
tall, to 2 cm. in diameter. Voucher for wood specimen,
MADw. Bark smooth except for lenticels. Pistillate. In
anthesis, and at this stage the lowermost leaves in the short
shoots have a very different aspect from the distinctive
long-attenuate adult leaves.
