TILIACEAE Tilia americana L.
Young tree 7 m. tall, with four stems 15 cm. in diameter
and several smaller sprouts from the base.
June 19, 1977. Flowers fragrant, pale cream-
yellow except for white calyx and white ovary,
the ovary turning green.
15164-b. Aug. 18, 1977. There was very poor fruit-set
this year and both the leaves and the inflor-
escence bract look sick; only one fruiting
specimen pressed (at WIS).
Young ungrazed woods on rocky NW-facing slope near
limestone quarry. Populus grandidentata, Acer saccharum.
Carya ovata, Ostrya virginiana, Prunus serotina, with
Desmodium acuminatum, Phryma leptostachya, Aralia
racemosa, Adiantum pedatum, Panax quinquefolia (rare).
