Description
Pileus 3.5-7.5 cm broad, convex to plano-convex, dry, tomentose to matted tomentose, deep purple brown (11E4), fading toward margin to 9E4. Flesh white, unchanging, up to 15 mm deep, with pungent odor, mild taste. Tubes adnate, white to 4B3, eventually near 5B3 (not quite mature), unchanging; pores concolorous, staining near 6B4, minute (up to 1-2/mm). Stipe 4-9 cm long, 5-20 mm broad, dry, equal, near 14D3 when young, near 9E-F4 with age, not reticulate, glabrous, but streaked with pigment, clearly lilac at base with interior solid, white, unchanging. N.B. In the field, this looks very much like T. plumbeoviolaceus/ T. violatinctus of SE USA.
