Research Institute, 4 miles due south-southeast of
junction of Smithville Road and U.S. Route 1. West
side of Dyer Bay, on east facing ridge at top of “Blue
Trail”. Elevation about 160-170 feet. Acidic humus,
sand, gravel; granitic - gneissic outcrops and glacial
boulders.
Coastal evergreen conifer forest (boreal forest),
dominated by Abies balsamea, Picea rubens, Betula
papyrifera. Drier blueberry barrens with Pinus
banksiana, Vaccinium angustifolium, Gaylussacia
baccata. Pockets of drying bog with Kalmia
angustifolia, Nemopanthus mucronatus. Local,
occasional shrub 1 meter tall, pale blueish-green
leaves, fruit green or dried and brown; much capsule
predation here; dry heath bog at dry barrens opening.
