In open sphagnum heath bog. Wet peat over glacial and and gravel. With Chamaedaphne, Kalmia spp., Vaccinium spp., Empetrum, Eriophorum, Rhododendron canadense, Sarracenia purpurea. Common.

Flowers white. Co-dominant shrub in bog; 0.5-1 meter tall.
