Locally common component of the chaparral on southerly to southeasterly slopes; associated locally with Salvia mellifera, Helianthus gracilentus, Rhus ovata, Ceanothus crassijblius, Eriogonum fasciculatum, Eriodictyon trichocalyx, Garrya vectichii, Rhamnus ilicijblia, Heteromeles arbutifolia, Cercocarpus betuloides, Arctostaphylos glauca, Yucca whipplei parishii, Adenostoma fasciculatum, etc. Burl not necessarily apparent; leaves green; fruits pjlosulose.
