Elongation of the Inflorescence in liquidambar.
. On page 43# of Master’s Vegetable Teratology, it is stated
that “MM. Cios and.DeSchonenfelci have recorded the existence ,
a, variety of the S#eet Chestnut, Castanea, in which the pistil- /
fate catkins were as long and bore nearly as many flowers as the
staminate. This is stateci to be of constant occurrence in some
localities and to-be accompariied by a diminished size of the fruits.
Assimilar elongation has bfeen observed in the Walnut, catkins
of which havi^ been. |/sqn bearing thirty to thirty-five large nuts.”
We have a similar eloi%ation of the pistillate inflorescence to report
in the case of the Sweet :Gum, Liquidambar styracijlua, found at
NeW Dorp, Staten Island ^The cluster is over three inches long, v
with six distinct g^omerulés below, the lowest of which is pedi-
celledvthe others sessile and%erging into thè terminal confluent
portion.
