Flora of the Paumonek Wetland, Long Island Lindera benzoin (L.) Plume NEW YORK, SUFFOLK CO.: Huntington Station, in the Paumonek Wetland, west of Walt Whitman High School. Small sized multi- stemmed shrub, approx. 1.2 m tall. Stems and twigs emit a spicy scent when scratched or broken. Dominant species in shrub layer, hi an Oak- Hickory Mesic Woodland with Quercus rubra, Acer rubrum, and Carya on top of a small rolling moraine hill. Matthew C.
