Woods State Natural Area, remnant of the Big Black
Slough, Ohio River Floodplain, vicinity of Upper Salem
Road, about 2 miles northwest of Metropolis, and 8
miles northeast of Joppa. Joppa 7.5’ quadrangle.
(CTAP study area.) Soils in the Hosmer series on top
of Peoria loess cap; silt loam, erodable.
Wet-mesic floodplain forest dominated by Acer
rubrum, Celtis laevigata, Quercus pagoda,
Liquidambar styraciflua, and Quercus palustris. With
Carex emoryi. Fruit green, immature, leaves dark green
above, paler, glaucous below; foliage with pleasant spicy
aroma.
