artificial levee, New Crystal Lake Hunt Club, about 1
mile north-northeast of Gulfport, west side of Crystal
Lake. Burlington 7.5’ quadrangle. Elevation about 530
feet. Alluvial soil, primarily silt.
Wet-mesic floodplain forest, patchwork of swamps, few
shrubs, trees spaced; dominated by Acer saccharinum,
Fraxinus, Quercus palustris, Ulmus americana;
Toxicodendron radicans and Vitis vines common.
Flowers white; fruit young, leaves dark green above,
glaucous beneath; pith pale tan. Occasional shrub to 2-3
meters tall.
