Murrell 1992 Duke university Herbarium Shrub 5 m. tall, with 5 stems from base, 4 cm. in diameter; well-grown shrubs with characteristic whorls of branches; stems green; leaves smooth, dark green above, much lighter green below; underside of petiole in lower 1/2 is reddish. Inflorescence branches bright red; fruit abundant, to 8 mm. in diameter, dark blue with purple pulp and juice.
