"COTTONWOOD SWAMP": Confluence of San
Francisquito Canyon stream and two tributaries draining
off the southeast slopes of Red Mountain. Warm Springs
Mountain 1.5' USGS Quadrangle. T5N R16W, N/2 NE/4
SW/4 section 1 (compensating for distortion of the
section). Elevation ca 1680-1690 feet.
Broad marshy area- overstory dominated by Populus
fremontii, Salix laevigata, and S. lasiolepis. Dissected by San
Francisquito Canyon Road.
Multi-trunked tree ca 5-6 m tall; locally uncommon.
Anomalous plant: Leaves glabrous except for a few hairs along
the sides of the midrib; similar toF. uhdei but leaflets entire and
midrib pubescence very thin; leaflets 3-7, the terminal leaflet to
12 cm long; style 2-lobed; fruits to ca 42 mm long (including
wing). Other local associates include Urtica holosericea,
Heliotropiwn curassavicum oculalum, Helenium puberulum, and
Platanus racemosa.
