BETULACEAE Ostrya virginiana (Mill.) K. Koch
Tree 12 m. tall, with two trunks from base, both 12
cm. in diameter. Bark finely furrowed, almost stringy.
Fruiting bracts inflated, very pale green, beginning to
turn brown. The fruit within is green.
Common in ridgetop woods, but only about half as tall
as the general thick canopy of Quercus alba, Q. rubra,
Carya ovata, Acer rubrum, Prunus serotina, the area
ungrazed but there has been selective lumbering over
the decades.
