The New York Botanical Garden Cultivated Plants of U.S.A. Corvlus avellana L., cv. "Fusco-rubra" "Purple-leaved European Hazelnut" det. M. Nee, 1991 New York, Bronx Co., Bronx, on the grounds of the New York Botanical Garden. Clump 1 m. in diameter, with 40 stems, the largest 5 m. tall and 12 cm. in diameter; bark with prominent horizontal lenticels. Female inflorescences dull dark red; male inflorescences hanging, were in anthesis a few weeks ago in unusually early spring warm spell. See no. 40408-a for mature leaves collected on 5 Sept. 1991.
