miles due east-southeast of Vandalia. Powerline
clearing. Brownstown 7.5 minute U.S.G.S. quadrangle.
Elevation 580-590 feet. Disturbed sandy clay-loam.
Dry-mesic upland forest, open roadside bank with
prairie elements, dominated by Juniperus virginiana,
Prunus serotina, Quercus imbricaria, Cercis
canadensis, Vitis riparia, Tridens flavus. Locally
common shrub 2 meters tall, fruit about mature,
branches nodding from weight; pale male catkins
immature; leaves paler beneath; west-facing forest
margin.
