BETULACEAE Carpinus caroliniana Walt.
Tree 6 m. tall, 25 cm. in diameter. Bark smooth, gray,
the trunk and especially the branches are fluted.
April 17, 1977. Not quite in anthesis. Male
aments green, the scales with brown tips.
Emerging stigmas bright red.

Rich but heavily grazed woods on N-facing slope and
ravines, Acer saccharum, Quercus rubra, Ostrya
virginiana, Tilia americana, with herb layer of
Anemonella thalictroldes, Aplectrum hyemale, Hepatica
acutiloba, Sanguinaria canadensis.
