Small, shrubby tree 20ft tall, largest trunk diameter 4in,
occasional. Growing at the sunny edge of a young, shrubby
woodland on a bluff in disturbed clay soil (Ouachita, Bibb,
and Jena soils, frequently flooded; Ouchita: Fine-silty,
siliceous, active, thermic Fluventic Dystrudepts; Bibb:
Coarse-loamy, siliceous, active, acid, thermic Typic
Fluvaquents; Jena: Coarse-loamy, siliceous, active, thermic
Fluventic Dystrudepts). Growing with Agrostis hyemalis,
Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Andropogon virginicus, Briza minor,
Campsis radicans, Celtis laevigata, Clematis virginiana (?),
Cocculus carolinus, Dichanthelium commutatum, Galium
aparine, Gelsemium sempervirens, Geranium sp., Hordeum
pusillum, Ilex vomitoria, Ligustrum sinense, Liquidambar
styraciflua, Lolium perenne, Lonicera japónica, Lygodium
japonicum, Melia azedarach, Pinus glabra, P. taeda,
Platanus occidentalis, Prunus serótina, Quercus nigra, Rubus
