Ada Hayden Herbarium Iowa State University Flora of Iowa Betula pumila L. var. alandulifera Regel Chickasaw County: T95N R12W Section 5 NE4 NE4 NW4 SW4 UTM (NAD83, 15T): 557436 East, 4769380 North An approximately 4 acre rich fen is located about 1.75 miles northeast of the intersection of U.S. Highway 63 and State Highway 24 in New Hampton. It is southwest of the East Fork of the Wapsipinicon River. The county soil survey maps the fen as Palms muck, 1 to 4 percent slopes (221B), aTerric Medisaprist. Palms muck formed in 16 to 50 inches of organic material and the underlying loamy mineral material. The fen is on the Iowan Surface. Betula oumila is common to locally abundant in the fen. The pistillate catkins are green. Betula pumila is associated with Alnus ruaosa. Carex interior. Chelone glabra. Cirsium muticum. Eupatorium maculatum.
