An approximately 4 acre rich fen is located about 1.75 miles northeast of the
intersection of U.S. Highway 63 and State Highway 24 in New Hampton. It is
southwest of the East Fork of the Wapsipinicon River. The county soil survey
maps the fen as Palms muck, 1 to 4 percent slopes (221B), a Terric
Medisaprist. Palms muck formed in 16 to 50 inches of organic material and the
underlying loamy mineral material. The fen is on the Iowan Surface.
100+ genets of Betula pumila. with 3000+ ramets, are scattered over the fen.
Betula pumila is associated with Aster umbellatus. Carex sp., Eupatorium
maculatum and Thelvpteris palustris.
