The site is approximately 5.5 miles southeast of downtown New Hampton. Herman
and Hilda Schroeder Preserve, owned by the Chickasaw County Conservation
Board. A very disturbed, 5+ acre rich fen occurs adjacent to and northeast of an
abandoned railroad right-of-way. This site was probably disturbed in the past by
grazing. Portions of the fen are dominated by tall vegetation, especially
composites. The soil in the fen is Houghton muck, 2 to 5 percent slopes (621B), a
Typic Medisaprist. The fen is in the Wapsipinicon River watershed and on the
Iowan Surface.
37 genets, consisting of 1500+ ramets. Betula pumila was associated with Caltha
palustrls, Carex interior, Helianthus grosseserratus, Saxifraga pensylvanica and
Zizia aurea.
