Betula pumila L. var. alandulifera Regel
Howard County: Oakdale Township T100N R14W Section 27
SE4SW4NW4SW4
UTM (15T, NAD27): 540929 East, 4810427 North
Kleckner Wildlife Area is approximately 6.5 miles southwest of Chester. It is
owned by the Howard County Conservation Board. A seep occurs on a
south/southeast-facing slope north of Staff Creek. The soil is saturated at the
collection site. The soil survey maps the soil here as Bassett loam, 5 to 9
percent slopes (171C), a Typic Hapludoll. The seep is on the Iowan Surface.
There appear to be 8 genets and 200+ ramets of Betula pumila in the seep.
About 90+ percent of the catkins are brown and dry, but some are still green
and moist. Ramets vary in height from about 0.3 to 3.0 meters. Betula pumila
is associated with Aster umbellatus. Carex stricta. Euoatorium maculatum
Impatiens capensis. Onoclea sensibilis. Pvcnanthemum virainianum Rhamnus
cathartica. Solidaao aiaantea and Thelvoteris palustris.
