Thomson Marsh, owned by the Howard County Conservation Board, is
approximately 4.5 miles south/southwest of the intersection of State Highway
9 and County Road V58 in Cresco. A forest (many of the trees are Populus
tremuloides) occurs in much of the site (having at least in part invaded an
area that was probably tallgrass prairie or sedge meadow based on the soil
mapped at the collection site which is Clyde silty clay loam (84), a Typic
Haplaquoll). This site is on the Iowan Surface.
One genet, with 10 or more ramets, occurs in a somewhat open area in the
northwest portion of the forest. The ramets are approximately 3 meters tall
and have green fruits. Betula pumila is associated with Calamaarostis
canadensis. Caltha palustris. Chelone glabra. Eupatorium maculatum.
Impatiens capensis. Onoclea sensibilis. Parthenocissus auinauefolia. Rumex
orbiculatus and Urtica dioica.
