Woody Plants of U.S.A.: WISCONSIN: Richland County BETULACEAE Betula nigra L. Tree 14 m. tall, 40 cm. in diameter. Twigs dark until about 5 cm. in diameter, then developing light salmon- colored papery bark, the bark becoming increasingly thicker and darker after branches more than 15 cm. in diameter. With abundant flowers, not quite in anthesis yet, but slightly more advanced than other individuals of the species here. Male catkins hanging, the tips of the bracts red-brown; female catkins erect, green, the stigmas bright red. Grazed floodplain forest along Pine River, with Ulmus americana, Fraxinus pensyvlanica, Zanthoxylum ameri- canum, Ribes missouriense. Only a few trees of this species here, common along Wisconsin River 3 km. to south but ranges little further north along the much smaller Pine River. 1 km N of GOTHAM.
