W. WILLARD ASHE,
CONSULTING FORESTER.
RALEIGH, N.C.
April 29th., 1901.
Dr. J. K. Small,
New York, N. Y.
Dear Dr. Small:
V.. It
You will have to apply to Dr. Geo. T. Winston, director
of the North Carolina Experiment Station, for the copy of the Bulletin
which you desire.
I am sorry that I have no copy that I can send you.
I am sending you by mail a fragmentary specimen of Celtis. which
seems to me to be very interesting, though I do not know enough about
this group or its variations to refer it with certainty. I thought
it might be one of Refinesque *s, but cannot malce it fit any of his
descriptions. The tree of course, is related to C. Mississippiensis,
having small fruit, but obovate instead of globular* The leaves are
always elliptic, like those of some of the Texas species and roughened.
It grows with the typical 0. MississiPTJiensis. but is a smaller tree
and prefers rocky banks. It is not uncommon on the Little Tennessee
River, in both North Carolina and Tennessee, where I saw a great deal
of it last fall* It also grows near Salisbury, N. C. but I have no
specimen ar£ ttx in fruit from that place.
I will try to let you have the Robinia paper shortly. I was taken
sick last Dec* while in Washington, and am just beginning to get my
strength back and to work again and have several month's accumulation
on hand now to attend to.
Yours very truly,
HERBARIUM OF W. W. ASHE.
