  • Georeferencing Method

    Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Because of the large distance between Bom Gosto and Olivença, and the old age of this collection (1940's), locating any specific road between these localities was determined to be unrealistic and unnecessary; therefore, georeferenced to the approximate geographic midpoint between the settlement of Bom Gosto and the town of Olivença, in Mun. Ilhéus, Bahia. Using Falling Rain Global Gazetteer Version 2.2, found coordinates for the settlement of Bom Gosto, and using Google Maps - Satellite View, verified the presence of a placed named "Bom Gosto" in the immediate vicinity of these coordinates. Using Google Maps - Search Engine, found the general location of the city of Olivença, then using Google Maps - Satellite View, found the nearby town referenced as "Olivença" in Wikimapia. Beginning at the approximate geographic center of Bom Gosto (-12.1666682 -41.1333302), used Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) to measure a straight line to the approximate geographic center of the village of Olivença (-14.9482471, -39.0107292), then halved this distance to approximate the location of the midpoint between these two named localities. Used Canadensys Lat/Long Crosshairs to find the coordinates of the midpoint. Input coordinates, linear extent (half the distance between the approximated geographic centers of the settlement of Bom Gosto, and the town of Olivença, 192763 m), and measurement error (1 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Named Place: Between two Places).
