Habitat
Locally common, but restricted to 2950 to 3000 m in upper levels of bosque and in ridge top scrub. Vegetation: elfin ericaceous scrub with dwarf trees on ridge top slope.

Description
Shrub, 50 cm; stems rose-pink; leaves discolorous, dark green glossy above with sunken primary veins, much paler below with raised primary veins; calyces pinkish red (some plants with a white waxy coating on the calyces), the 5 petals dark purple, almost black, filaments blood-red, anthers cream, style dark purple. Phenology of specimen: Fertile.
