Habitat
Common in clonal colonies on both sides of road. Soil sandy, beige, very rocky, and apparently only ca. 20 cm thick over sandstone bedrock. Very dry conditions.

Description
Palm acaulescent with subterranean trunk. LEAVES 3-6 in crown, spirally arranged and spreading. Leaf sheath plus petiole is 12-28+ cm long with a leaf petiole 0.5-0.8 cm wide and 0.3-0.4 cm thick and a fibrous leaf sheath, adaxially channeled and abaxially rounded. Leaf rachis 53-90 cm long. 23-43 pairs of leaflets which are distributed regularly to loosely in clusters of 2-3(-4) along the rachis in one plane. Basal leaflets 3-7 cm long x 0.1-0.3 cm wide, middle leaflets 13-25 cm long x 0.8-1 cm wide, and apical leaflets 6-16 cm long x 0.1-0.3 cm wide. Androgynous INFLORESCENCE with 11-28 (-41) cm long, 0.6-1 cm wide and 0.4-0.7 cm thick peduncle and 8-15 cm long rachis. There are 11-20 primary branches measuring 5-12 cm long at the apex and 9-18 cm long at the base. Peduncular bract with a total length of 30-51 cm and the expanded or inflated part of the bract measuring 16-28 cm long x 1.8-6 cm in width and with a 4.3-6.5 cm perimeter and a 1-2 mm thickness.
