609. Renfrewia parvula Griggs. Renfrewia parvula, a new Kelp from Van-
couver Island. Postelsia, 2: 251. 1906. (Lam inaria ephemera Setchell.)
Plant very variable in shape, size and proportions; laminae thin, (less than I mm.),
yellowish-brown; cryptostomata absent; stipe terete below, more rigid than the lam-
ina; lamina oblong, 25-90 mm. in width, as much as 50 cm. long, usually cuneate at
the base and very gradually merging into the stipe, but in broad, s'hort-stiped speci-
mens sometimes rounded; stipe varying from 2.5-20 cm. in length; holdfast a simple
disc without any trace of hapteres, 8-20 mm. in width; mucilage ducts absent from
both stipe and lamina; sori formed 0x1 almost any portion of the lamina.
Growing in sublittoral zone in tide pools and recesses, never uncovered even at the low-
est tides.
