: Thallus up to 95 cm. high with one to several erect,
cylindrical, dichotomously branched fronds arising from a spongy disc.
Branches up to 10 mm. in diameter. Colour dark green.

On rocks in the middle and lower intertidal zones in areas exposed
to heavy surf. Waadah Island, at the entrance to Neah Bay, Washing-
ton, U.S.A. (Lat. 48°23'N. Long. 124°36'W.).
DESCRIPTION: Thallus erect, up to 45 cm. high, growing in dense stands.
Thallus comprising a stout hollow stipe attached by a holdfast of short
branched haptera and bearing numerous longitudinally furrowed blades at
the apex. Colour olive brown.
